Methodology

Basic principle

The Best Employers in the UK 2016 top 400 employers have been chosen based on an independent survey from a vast sample of 15,000 UK employees working for firms and or institutions with more than 500 employees in the UK.

The employees have been consulted anonymously through several online panels, which enabled the employee to openly state his/her opinion, avoiding any influence from their employer.

The survey has been conducted using an online access panel, providing a representative sample of employees.

Selection of the employers

Each employee has been asked which firm or institution he or she works for, in an open-ended question with an autofill-option. Where appropriate subsidiaries of larger entities have been combined for evaluation. The survey has been conducted on companies from all industry sectors employing more than 500 employees in the United Kingdom. The recommended employers have been grouped into one or more of the 25 industry sectors. Companies operating in finance or banking sectors, direct competitors of Bloomberg and companies involved in any way with weapons, gambling, tobacco and pornography have been excluded from the ranking.

The recommended employers have been classified into one or more of the 25 industry sectors listed below:

  1. Oil & Gas Operations
  2. Construction, Mining and Chemicals
  3. Utilities
  4. Engineering, Manufacturing
  5. Automotive (Automotive and Suppliers)

Evaluation criteria

The willingness to recommend one’s own employer was considered the most important aspect of our assessment; this metric is based on the theory of the Net Promoter Score. We asked a question requiring an answer on a scale of 0 to 10, where 0 means "I wouldn’t recommend my employer under any circumstances" and 10 means "I would definitely recommend my employer". A second aspect to our assessment involved asking employees to mention good or bad employers in sectors/industries besides their own.

Calculation

For more than 800 employers a statistically significant score could be calculated. More than 400 employers of those have been awarded. The number of awarded employers per industry is limited to 25.
